Geocache Description:

I often wondered how Marrett Road got its name. It used to be called Middle Street. Present day Marrett Square is where it intersects with Waltham Street and an 1898 map shows this area as the old Valley Field Farm.

In 1775, Amos Marrett was a soldier in Captain John Parker's Lexington company. He purchased a 140 acre farm in Lexington making him one of the largest landowners around. In 1789, President George Washington came through Lexington and spoke with Marrett and a few other important folks. A letter written by Sarah Monroe to Mary Mason said this:

"November, 1789. We have had great doings here. Our Loved President has journeyed here to Lexington and has took dinner at our very House... A most diverting thing took place after this; M'. Washington, you must know, is much besstirred over farming matters and had much to ask of the crops etc, and so talking, he turned to Mr. Marrett and asked if he thought not that the hogs in New England have exceeding long legs. This well-nigh upset the company, for you must know that 'twas Mr. Marrett who, at the last town meeting, contended that the Hogs should be impounded, and more by token, he will soon be named for Hog-reeve himself, being about to Marry."

Hog-reeve: an appointed officer charted with the prevention of stray swine. Hogs were supposed to have rings in their noses to reduce the amount of damage they could do to gardens and crops by rooting.

So Marrett was quite a guy back in the day. No wonder why they named a street after him.
