Church Micro 2401 - Highworth
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
The latest in the Church Micro series placed on the footpath at a busy road junction with a lovely view of St Michael & All Angels church in Highworth.
** I can never write with the little pencils placed in these caches, so please bring a pen!! **
This is my first hide, but one that I have been meaning to place for a very long time! Highworth is well served with geocaches round its outskirts, but has nothing in its middle! Hopefully I will rectify this during the next few months. Due to mouse activity (!!) I have had to use something sturdier (and less chewable) than a 35 mm canister, and have ended up with either a large micro or a small small ... if anyone thinks I should change the size of the cache please let me know.
First things first, please note that this cache is placed at a VERY busy road junction. Traffic is regularly stationary here waiting for the traffic lights to change, so stealth will be needed. There are a couple of laybys opposite for those wishing to cache and dash ... but why not stop a while and see what this pretty town has to offer.
The earliest record of a church at this location is in the Doomsday Book in 1086, and there is a record of clergy there for 1290 onwards. The earliest St Michael's register records baptisms, marriages and burials beginning in 1539 during the reign of Henry VIII.
The building contains a 12th century tympanum over the inside of the south door leading to the porch. The bell tower contains 8 bells that are rung regularly. There is some fine stained glass including a window installed to mark the millenium and another to commemorate the four sons of the Brown family who all died in World War I.
To the left of the West Door is a rough hole in the wall of the church. Tradition says that this is where a cannon ball hit when it was fired by Cromwell's forces on Friday 27June 1645. They were en route from Lechlade to Wanborough, when they drew up before the church and prepared to storm it. A Royalist garrison inside the church, led by one Major Hen, surrendered and Cromwell's men took 70 prisoners from the church. The cannon ball has been put away for safekeeping, but apparently it can be seen on request!
For further information on the church please visit their website: www.stmichaelshighworth.co.uk.
If anybody would like to expand this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
There is also a Church Micro Stats page found via the Bookmark list
