This cache is one of the Dirty Dave Series. Dave hopes you will be able to find 29 caches on February 29. They are easy, involve only short walks, and have parking nearby. Dave doesn't believe in micros. Have fun. Join Dave later for his event dinner at which time he will announce the last cache in the series, a night cache.
One of Dirt Dave's favorite trees is the Bigleaf Maple. Common in the Northwest, the Bigleaf Maple is a large, handsome, deciduous tree. Covered with moss, they often host Polypodium glycyrrhiza (Licorice fern), which grows on their trunks. In the rain forests of the Olympic Peninsula, the moss grows so thick it becomes compost, where the trees sprout roots even up in their canopies. The sap can make maple syrup, although not as well as eastern North American species. It takes three times as much sap from our native maple to make a quantity of syrup.
Native Americans had quite a few uses for the tree. Medicinally, it was used to treat sore throats. Sprouted seeds were eaten, and some tribes rubbed the leaves on young men's faces so they would not grow thick beards. The wood was used to make paddles; leaves were used as temporary containers.
One of Dirty Dave's uses of the Bigleaf maple is making sturdy and light walking sticks. These reliable and trustworthy walking sticks have aided Dirty Dave on many of his adventures like this one in Burfoot Park. So enjoy and appreciate the wonderful Bigleaf Maple while On the Way to the Beach.
