From exit 56 on highway I19, take the service road on the EAST side
2.9 miles South to Elephant Head Rd. Go East on Elephant Head Rd.
1.5 miles to Whipple Observatory Rd. This site, halfway up Mt.
Hopkins on the road to the Whipple Observatory, yields a sweeping
view of the Santa Cruz Valley and the mountains all the way to the
North Side of Tucson which is forty miles away. Standing at the
site and looking West one sees the "Devil's Cash ( cache) Box" a
mile or so away. This is three peaks supposedly guarding a treasure
or gold mine.
There is a paved road except for three blocks of good gravel
road. Parking is within three blocks of the cache site.
The site is near the Amateur Astronomy Vista which is a series
of cement squares with benches where amateurs set up their
telescopes.
Access is easy. Plan a picnic at the Whipple Observatory
Visitors Center.
