Different Seasons (1982) is a collection of four
Stephen King novellas with a more serious tone than the horror
fiction for which King is famous. The novellas
are:
Rita Hayworth
and the Shawshank Redemption
Apt
Pupil
The
Body
The Breathing
Method
All
were adapted to the big screen with the exception of The Breathing
Method. At the ending of the book, there is also a brief afterword,
which King wrote on January 4, 1982. In it, he explains when he
wrote the four novellas, as well as how his agents expressed
concern, he would be "written off" as someone who only wrote
horror.

director, he wanted to adapt the novella into a film. In 1995,
Singer asked his friend and screenwriter Brandon Boyce to write a
spec script adapting the novella. Boyce recalled the writing
process, "I thought it was a great stageplay, actually... two
people, pretty much in a house talking. My script was completely on
spec, so, if it didn't work out, at least I'd have a writing
