Memorial Circle Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

OReviewer: As there's been no cache to find for a long time or has had no owner response for at least 30 days, I'm archiving it to keep it from showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements.

Please note that if geocaches are archived by a reviewer or Geocaching HQ for lack of maintenance, they are not eligible for unarchival.

Geocache Description:

This is a puzzle cache. The cache is not located at the posted coordinates. Please only do this cache during daylight hours. This is meant to be an easy cache as the subject matter is the focus here. The listed coordinates will bring you to an archway. Welcome to Memorial Circle.

Proceed through the archway to the Honor Roll Plaque. Information Point A. How many Red Cross Nurses had the last name Pierce? Please take note while you are here that this plaque refers to “The World War” not World War I. This is because the plaque was dedicated prior to World War II and therefore did not have a numbering system, it was simply, at that time, The World War.

You will be visiting several areas within Memorial Circle and gathering information throughout. Right now you should have Information Point A. You will need to plug your information into the following:

N 39 AB.CDE W 075 FG.HIJ

After you have created your coordinates you are looking for a bison tube with log only. We hope you are as amazed at this place as we are. We hope you will learn something new. This area will give you a sense of respect, pride, patriotism and astonishment all at the same time. It is kept fairly clean, but if you do see any trash, please dispose of it in the nearby trash cans. Remember CITO. Let’s continue the journey, shall we?

The area you are currently in is outside of the main circle in the southern point. We will travel to the other points first to gather information for B and C and then we will go into the circle to obtain the rest of the information. B is in the eastern point. Proceed there.

When you get to the eastern point you will see a large 8 sided plaque in tribute to the Men and Women who gave service in the Armed Forces of our Country during World War II, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam. While there are many, many names on the plaques, there is a small section of each war that lists those who were unfortunately killed in action (KIA). Information Point B. Take the number of KIA in Vietnam and add it to the number of KIA in the Korean Conflict. Take that number and divide by 2. This new number is your B. Please take your time reading over the names and when you are ready, proceed to the northern point where we will gather the information for C.

Arriving at the northern point you will be looking eye to eye with President John Fitzgerald Kennedy. This bust was dedicated by the Spanish Speaking People of Vineland NJ. You need to find the names of those who dedicated this bust. Information Point C. How many names are listed? (Mr. and Mrs. Count as 1.) Use this number for C. Time to proceed into the circle. When you are looking at JFK turn completely around, cross the street and go to the nearest large plaque.

You should now be at the World War II / Korean Conflict dedication plaque. Information Point D. How many individual names are listed on this plaque? Use this number for D. From this point you will be walking the circle proceeding to your right (counter-clockwise) and gathering the rest of the information so pay attention to your surroundings.

On your trip around the circle the next bit of information will come from a small plaque for Priv. J. Alfred Ackley, Jr. We wanted you to take note of this plaque due to the circumstances described. He was discharged from the National Guard. A year later he answered the draft call, and only 9 days after that he unfortunately passed away. Information Point E. Looking at the day he was discharged, he was discharged on August, ?, 1917. Use the day for E. Continue around the circle.

Your next stop will be of considerable interest to quite a few cachers as there is an ammo box here. Having this tie-in to geocaching, we were blown away at the information here. We felt as if we were walking on sacred ground. You are standing at the Vietnam War Memorial. Take some time here to read the names. It is well worth your while. Information Point F. How many of the 14 names were in the Air Force? Use this number for F. When you are finished here continue around the circle.

The next point of interest is a large black stone in honor of Sgt. Dominick Pilla. Information Point G. How many helicopters are pictured on the stone? Use this number for G. and proceed around the circle.

You will soon come to the southern side of the circle and just down the path outside of the circle is the Soldier’s and Sailor’s Memorial Circle plaque. As far as dedication dates are concerned this is the oldest in Memorial Circle. This is what started it all. You will notice that this plaque also refers to The World War rather than World War I. Please take a moment to read this plaque. The wording is very eloquent and you will be hard pressed to find anyone who talks like this in today’s society. Information Point H. How many stars are there between “In the World War” and “1917” Use this number for H.

Before we get you to the final take a moment and look around the area. You will see many headstones with a cross at the top. There are some with the Star of David at the top. Information Point I. How many Jewish headstones are on site here? Use this number for I, and continue around the circle.

The next large stone is the Korean War Memorial. There are many names listed here as well. Information Point J. Count the total number of names. This should be a two digit number. Add these two digits together and use that number for J.

You should now have all the information needed to create your coordinates. Don’t forget to sign the log.

Happy Caching!
