Geocache Description:

This was originally going to be the GZ for the puzzle For Whom the Bell Tolls. However, anyone with a vague bit of cunning could have figured out that GZ was always going to be the structure at the GZ for this traditional cache...or at least it was. The original GZ of the shark bell proved to be to troublesome and it has moved slightly.

The Dunedin shark nets were an affair of high public interest during 2011. Installed after shark attacks in the 1960s (memorial plaque near to GZ) they were designed to keep sharks out from the popular beaches nearby. The annual cost of $38,000, by-catch of over 700 non target species and the fact that the nets never caught a single great white shark led to the DCC voting to withdraw funding for the nets in late 2011. More details and information about a student film on the shark nets can be found in this Otago Daily Times article.
