Geocache Description:

This is one of those engineering feats that is impressive given the technological equipment that was available 137 years ago.

In the 1870s the growing population at Stawell led to the demand for a reliable water supply. John D'Alton devised an ambitious system to bring water from the Grampians via a 1km tunnel cut through the Mt William range. The water (from Fyans Creek) was then transferred by gravity along a system of aqueducts and open flumes on stone and timber supports and a 12 inch pipeline to a holding reservoir on Big Hill at Stawell. The project (completed from 1874-1881) brought workers into the area and a small township developed at Borough Huts. The scheme was ultimately successful, and also very expensive, the council drawing a 110,000 pound loan at six per cent to finance it.

The Cache
Tunnel Road runs for 2km off the main Pomonal-Halls Gap Rd and there is a small carpark about 60m from the cache. The road in gets a little steep at the end but a 2wd should be fine. It is a 1L screwtop container and no need to leave the walking track.
