Geocache Description:

Visiting this cache will lead you to an historic spot in Klein Windhoek. You do not need access to find the cache.

John Ludwig was born in Germany in 1857 and after travelling far and wide, eventually emigrated in 1887 to what was then German South West Africa, finally settling in Klein Windhoek in 1892.

He established and ran a restaurant called “Ludwigslust”, situated between extensive vineyards and orchards, enabling him to supply wine and fresh produce to his customers. In later years, the same vines produced fine wines and brandy. He also initiated tobacco farming in the area.
Other settlers joined him, homes were built, cattle were reared and gardens planted. John Ludwig played a considerable role in cultural, business and public life and is often considered to be the founder of Klein Windhoek.

He died in Windhoek on 27 February 1913 after a stomach operation and was the first person to be buried in the small Klein Windhoek cemetery, on 1 March 1913. His wife Lida, who died in December 1954, is buried beside him.
Their children, Angela and John are also buried here, as well as other members of the Ludwig and Höpfner families and several other adults and children.

The mausoleum was proclaimed as a national monument on 1 May 1967 not only for its historical significance, but for its architectural charm. It is maintained by the Windhoek Municipality.

John Ludwig’s original homestead built in 1907/08 is still in existence and is a private home, in the quiet and shady Kiekebusch Street with many of the original trees still gracing the garden.
