GQT – Tuesday I have had a contract to keep a garden tidy. This one in particular has a substantial lawn which the owner likes being kept in perfect stripes along its length. I charge a fixed price for the job so it is important for me to make sure I don’t go over the same ground twice whilst also producing a top quality finish. The lawn is rectangular and is 100m long by 50m wide. My current mower cuts a strip 0.4m wide. Taking into consideration the time taken to turn the mower and empting the grass cuttings every now and again this job takes all afternoon - four hours and ten minutes. I am thinking of getting a bigger mower that can cut 1m wide strips. Assuming I can keep the same average speed I was wondering how much time it would save me. Time saved = L.M hours Whilst the grass cutting contract is an agreed fixed price it is based upon a notional labour rate of £20 per hour. Bearing in mind I cut the grass once a week for 20 weeks and could easily get some extra work to fill in the time freed up how much extra cash could I earn during the 20 week period based on labour alone? Extra Cash = £ NOPQ Would this cover the cost of the second hand mower which I believe i can get for about £750 Yes R=9 No R=3 Anyway so much for my musing and browsing of the gardening mag what about a chache Here goes - us gardeners do this in our heads - you may need a pencil !!
