Geocache Description:

A short hike up a local cinder hill with views in all directions. Road access point off Townsend Winona is listed below. Hanging off the ground.

Find the cache then walk to each end of the hill top, only a hundred feet or so. EAST There sits Winona remember Bobby Troups song “Get Your Kicks on Route 66”. …Flagstaff Arizona don’t forget Winona….. The large red cinder mountain is Darling Pit which supplied cinders for the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe railroad bed back in the day. It was later used for road base on the Old Trails and route 66 alignments just south of the cache. Today it continues to provide cinders mined for use in Cinder Blocks and landscaping material. SOUTH Anderson Mesa and Mormon Mountain way off in the distance and Old Route 66 and the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway right below. If your lucky you may see and hear a train pass by. WEST Mount Elden a lava dome, look for the fire lookout on top. The dominant feature is by far the San Francisco Peaks a large volcanic mountain range which includes Humphreys Peak at 12,633 feet the highest point in Arizona. NORTH The eastern end of the San Francisco volcanic field with many extinct volcanoes and cinder hills. Sunset Crater the newest volcano at only 950 +/- years old and O’Leary peak among them. Hill Top Cache GCPZ7X is located this direction as well.
