Hardscrabble Canyon Cache Traditional Cache
Hardscrabble Canyon Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
A hard scrabble means to fumble, flounder, struggle, to scrape along. Whoever named the mesa “hardscrabble” had a vivid sense of hyperbole. But head a little west of FR194 to Hardscrabble Canyon in the Mazatzal Wilderness, and “scrabble” takes on a whole new meaning. Author Dan L. Thrapp used the name Hardscrabble Mesa when describing cavalry-Indian activities during the 1870’s. The name has stuck and now defines the mesa, the road and the rugged, wilderness canyon.
The cache is concealed just outside the wilderness boundary, but within 450 feet of the canyon. GZ is an easy half mile cross-country trek from Twin Buttes Rd (FR194). When retrieving, please keep the container attached to the tree. The log sheet is easily removed without unhooking the container. And, BYOP.
After signing the log, head west to these coords for a viewpoint that looks towards the rugged canyon.
N 34° 22.045 W 111° 33.860.
We recommend a high-clearance vehicle on the forest roads and sturdy shoes for hiking cross country. Bring water, snacks and watch out for venomous creatures in warm weather.
