Geocache Description:

A person in a fire spotting tower looking out the window is still the most effective means of fast detection of fires. With fast detection, the first attack on the fire is more likely to succeed.

From this cache you can see the cabin of the mt st Leonard fire tower and about 143 communications dishes. There is an existing cache under the tower where the tower operator (me) has left his phone number. If he is not already watching you can probably have a bit of a chat about what this tower is all about and suggest how the view can be improved to 360 degrees. I believe that one of the benefits of caching is too see and do things that you normally wouldn't do. If it is summers day a bonus may be possible. Fire detection by this method may seem like something from olden day times, however recent testing. By the csiro has shown the supposed best technology in fire detection has a 3% success rate. The human based system ran at 98%. If the tower is not operational their is still a public lookout with awesome views of Melbourne and suburbs and a little cache. This cache was difficult to rate. It is in pllane sight on a really obvious feature but different from where you would normally look.
