Although it's hardly a secret, Bells is definitely worth a look and counts as an iconic view for the Surfcoast.
Home of the RipCurl Pro surfing competition every Easter, Bells Beach is one of the most famous beaches in the world. This cache is named after the AC/DC song, which is belted out over the PA at the start of the finals of the RipCurl Pro. To be sitting on the beach, hearing this song echo around the Bells Bowl as it bounces off the headlands at Rincon and Winki Pop is an amazing experience.
First surfed in the 40's by the late "China" Gilbert the beach has since played host to all the big names of pro surfing. The RipCurl Pro held its 50th birthday in 2011.
In the early days, surfers either paddled around from Torquay, rode in a boat, or bashed their way along a rough dirt track which wound through the scrub along the clifftops between the township and Bells Beach. The remains of this track can still be seen and in fact, the clifftop walk from Jan Juc to Bells follows the old route in many places.
The beach is a tourist drawcard,as well as a mecca for surfers, so at times, muggle activity will be high, which explains the difficulty factor. At times, buses disgorge hordes of tourists for the compulsory photo and toilet stop so take care when grabbing and replacing the cache ! In bad weather or flat surf, difficulty is more like 1 - 1.5
Due to the RipCurl Pro, this cache will NOT be accessible during Easter and will be temporarily disabled. The infrastructure for the surf comp can take a few weeks to be cleared away enough for the cache to be accessible again.
Cache is a camo'ed 200ml Sistema.
This cache would be wheelchair accessible, although a helper would be needed for the final grab
