Welcome to Kew Green
There has been a hamlet around Kew Green since mediaeval times and Kew was first mentioned in documents in 1314. In the 18th century members of the royal family made Kew their country seat. In 1760 it became George III‘s principal retreat and as a result a large number of houses were built around the green. Until the 19th century cattle were grazed on Kew Green and the land around Kew was mostly used as market gardens. During the Second World War the Green was used as vegetable allotments in the “dig for victory” campaign. By St Anne’s church there is a memorial commemorating those who died in the two world wars.
St Anne's church was originally built in 1714 on land given by Queen Anne. The church has been altered and extended several times over the years. Unfortunately there are no records for a period between the 17-1800's because the Parish Chest was broken into in 1845 and the documents stolen. These records may have shed some light one way or another on the story of the marriage of King George III to Hannah Lightfoot in 1759 and their 3 children that they were reported to have had including a son called George Rex...
A wedding that definitely did take place around here was our own in Cambridge Cottage, 37 Kew Green, part of Kew Gardens, in 2006.
So, onto the cache, it is a small breath strip container that should blend in nicely. Please be stealthy, this is a very busy area.
