Geocache Description:

Originally placed by angel77ra.

Cache is an ammo box.

Trailhead parking is at N 35.53.023 W 106.19.731.

From the trailhead, take the dirt road West and then bear left onto the Satch Cowen trail. It is a well worn trail and eventually meets with the Quemazon Nature Trail which goes North. At this "T" intersection, do not follow the Satch Cowen Trail West up the bedrock. Go West, but a little to the left of the trail, along a bench. Cache is about 75' from the intersection. Coordinates were for a small rock cairn that sat next to the trail above the cache. The cache location is not far from the cairn (about 10 feet down?) and easy to get to. Note: August 2020. Cairn is probably gone. Keep in mind cliff climbing is not required.

The area is host to many different varieties of birds but since the fire the dead trees that still stand have made great homes for woodpeckers. If you pay close attention in the area you can spot many varieties of woodpeckers.

Many see the fire as a negative impact but over the years the area has become a wonderful escape from town where old meets new. Nature's way of cleanup has at least offered a new beginning. Imagine what this area will look like to new generations.

Woodpeckers are small to medium sized birds with chisel like beaks, short legs, stiff tails and long tongues used for capturing insects. Some species have feet with two toes pointing forward, and two backward, while several species have only three toes. Many woodpeckers have the habit of tapping noisily on tree trunks with their beaks. There are 218 species world wide, 26 North American species, and 14 New Mexico species.
