Point Lookout State Park is situated at the confluence of the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. Due to this peninsula’s unique location, it has seen many important times in U.S. history.

The area was inhabited by Native Americans and explored by Captain John Smith. During the Revolutionary War and War of 1812 this area was used as a lookout for British ships entering the Bay. The Pearl, a boat leaving Washington, DC in an attempt to free a number of slaves ran aground here, the story of which was used in Uncle Tom’s Cabin. A Confederate Prisoner camp was also established here during Civil War and included a small pox hospital and a contraband (African American solders) camp. The beauty of this location was also used for recreation. A resort area was opened here in the 1860’s, but burned down in 1877. Another resort opened here in the 1920’s and closed in 1989. A lighthouse stands on this location as well and is included on many listings of haunted places.

1) The Committee for Psychical Research conducted a séance in the lighthouse on February 16, 198A
2) Gerald Sword took up residence in the lighthouse on January 3, 197B

5) 192E, Windmill installed to generate electricity.
6) March 10, 195F the U.S. Navy purchased land between the lighthouse lot and garden plot.
7) In 1984 the Capital Edition (WDVM TV Channel G) filmed Laura Berg at Point Lookout.
8) Martha Edwards’ daughter Pamela kept the light from 185H – 1869
9) In June 186I the Prisoner of War Camp ceases operation.
10) In April 19J6 the Christmas in April Program and volunteers from the Navy gave the lighthouse a new coat of paint.
