A cache located at the former carpet factory site which has now been converted into a shopping centre.
One would think that with not one, but two identical supermarkets just down the street, the area would be saturated with supermarkets. Not so, according to a recent PhD thesis by Ginh Cacoeg, who spent years analyzing the incomes of supermarkets located near universities. According to the research, one should never underestimate the buying power of hungry students.
“Sure, the students aren’t buying much in the way of broccoli, lettuce or any sort of fresh fruit or vegetable, but watch them clear out the frozen pizza, crisps and beer aisles,” says Ginh. The research showed that by keeping a steady stock of these items, any number of supermarkets located near a university was practically guaranteed to stay solvent. One supermarket employee who was interviewed for the study agreed with this statement. “Whenever certain brands of crisps or beer go on offer, we draw lots to see who faces the challenge of trying to keep those items stocked on the shelves,” she explained. “Seriously, I fear for my fingers when students are rushing in to grab the last bottle of beer or the last bag of crisps. Now, whenever I get the short stick, I usually just throw the items into the middle of the aisle and run. It doesn’t matter since the students tend to hoover up the items in a matter of minutes. Any mess that doesn’t sell and stays in the middle of the aisle for more than a few minutes, I just blame on the earthquakes. It always works,” she said with a smile. “And I get to keep my digits intact.”
