Welcome to Onset-Lopes field, is the second in the Welcome To Onset series. The name Onset is from the Wampanoag word "On Kowam" meaning "Sandy landing place". Onset was founded in the 1880's by Spiritualists and Mediums as a summer camp. Today Onset is still a local hot spot , popular for its sandy beaches, food shops, Lopes Field Playground and summer rentals. The town pier is popular for fishing and is home to the Viking Canal Cruises and other fishing charter companies. In the summer, "The Summer of Love" free music series brings local bands to the band shell and is a popular attraction. Fourth of July brings the largest crowds to the beach and harbor for fireworks and celebration. In August is the popular "Cape Verdean Festival" and in the fall is the "Harvest Moon Festival". When you come for this cache, allow some time to explore the village and bring your camera to capture some of the spectacular views of Onset Harbor, Muddy Cove, Broad Cove, Wicketts Island and Onset Island, as well as many species of wildlife around the harbor and its marshes. This cache is well away from the playground at Lopes field, so there is no reason to make parents uneasy by searching around the playground. This is a micro so please bring your own pen.
