Geocache Description:

Elaine Kirchner (1918-2011) lived in Montebello for 70 years, and is known as the "First Lady of Montebello."

Elaine served as the first woman City Council member in 1958 and was later named "Honorary Mayor" of Montebello. She leaves behind a legacy in areas such as education, public service, business and cultural exchange. She once said that, in her lifetime, she was “happy to see more equality and acceptance for women in our country,” that women’s “opinions are respected and they matter.”

She has been President of the Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the YMCA Board of Managers, and President of the Beverly Hospital Foundation.

During her tenure with the city, she set up the sister city relationship with the Japanese city of Ashiya, a relationship that continues today.

She opened Montebello Travel, the first travel agency in Montebello, in 1961, where she served as president until 1992 when she sold the business.

She was especially proud of her association with the Montebello Woman's Club and Soroptimist International of Montebello, where she had served as President and was a Past Director of the Pacific Region. In 2006, she set up the Elaine Kirchner Live Your Dream Scholarship through Soroptimist International. “I would love to see this scholarship program have an impact throughout the lives of the recipients, from the time they enter college all the way to the start of their careers,” she said of the scholarship.

Beyond all of that, she was our grandmother. We love her, and miss her, and are proud of all she accomplished. And we are honored that the city chose to name the entrance to City Hall after her.
