Geocache Description:

On planning a day walk to Lake Surprise, it was a surprise to find that there was no cache here - so something had to be done about that!

Lake Surprise is a broad, shallow lake set amongst beech forest and tussock on the south-western slopes of Ruapehu. The Round the Mountain tramping circuit passes by the lake. For a day trip, start near the top of the Ohakune Mountain Road and head to Mangaturuturu hut (1 1/2 - 2 hours). The track passes the "Cascades" - rock smoothed by the flow of water and lahars. White silica deposits will be seen, deposited by mineral-rich alpine spring water. After reaching the hut, cross the Mangatururu river and allow another 45 minutes to walk up to Lake Surprise. Allow 5 hours return for the walk. This walk is best done in summer when the Mangaturuturu river is low. The Cascades should also be avoided in slippery or icy conditions. This track is not recommended for small children.
The cache is a 200ml sistema container placed near the lake in an open area off the track.
