Geocache Description:

Along a mapped trail within the Smith Rock State Park. The terrain rating takes into account that the trail descends and ascends steeply and can be slippery. THE CANYON TRAIL APPROACH MAY BE RESTRICTED FEBRUARY TO JULY 31st BECAUSE OF EAGLES NESTING.

Smith Rock has a spectacular geological history. You can learn about it from the cards in the cache as you sit in the mouth of a small cave and ponder dramatic cliffs stretching high above the Crooked River. It is common to see wildlife here, including Golden and Bald Eagles. If you are lucky you may see River Otters feeding and playing in the Crooked River. There is a hole in the cliff across the river with white deposits beneath it. Ravens have used the hole for a nest. This is a part of Smith Rock State Park that is visited by relatively few. It has little to attract rock climbers. Horseback riders and mountain bikers are more likely to come this way. It is a fun area for kids of all ages. Park in the regular area (day use fee), take the trail down into the canyon, and follow the Canyon Trail downstream, WITHOUT crossing the bridge. This is the "wildest" mapped trail in the park. You are going to have some downhill and uphill hiking, but you can do it all on established paths. During bald eagle nesting season you will encounter signs on part of the trail asking you to proceed quietly because of proximity to a nest. Please respect that request. The cache is a few feet from the trail. Try to disturb the area as little as possible while searching. In the winter, be prepared for ice or mud on the trail. In the summer, be sure to carry drinking water, and watch for rattlesnakes. The original content of trade items in this cache includes interesting rock specimens .
