Geocache Description:

True story: One day on our way to a cache, we were walking a trail next to a pond when a great blue heron stepped out of the reeds about twenty feet ahead of us. She looked at us, then turned and walked down the trail ahead of us. Occasionally she turned her head to check on us with one beady eye; we maintained a distance of twenty feet while admiring her dainty stride. When we reached the edge of the woods, our heron friend flew away, but when we reached the cache there was a heron feather on the ground next to the ammo can.

When we first came to this site below the Cowanesque Dam, a heron flew away. Our heron? Perhaps. When we returned to place this letterbox hybrid, we saw geese surfing in the rapids but no heron. Too bad. Maybe you'll be luckier.

To find this cache, first park at the given coords and make your way to the roof without walls. Stand under that roof. Now take 153 heron-steps toward the water, then pretend you're a heron and pause to look around. Is there another heron hiding in the cattails? Does the fishing look good? Might that frog be tasty?

Look around some more. What's that strange large whitish inverted V over there, about 225 heron-steps away? Walk (or fly?) over there to investigate.

You'll find an ammo can in a nest within 75 heron-steps of the inverted V.

8/28/14 update: Sure enough, the roof without walls is gone!

3/14/15 update: Now the inverted-V is gone. :(

All is not lost: If you wish to play the letterboxing game, stand on the concrete pad at N 41° 59.302 W 077° 08.904, where the roof without walls used to be. Now take 153 heron-steps toward the water (one heron-step is about 9 inches), then pretend you're a heron and pause to look around. If you look toward the westward toward the dam do you see a great place to hide a nest about 225 heron-steps away? Fly over there, step inside, and see you can find it!

We hope you enjoy your visit to this quiet location.

FTF: dejesky and A2G. Congratulations!
