Geocache Description:

St.Mary's - Woodnesborough

DAYLIGHT VISITS ONLY PLEASE

The church of St. Mary was built here around 1180 and is located at the top of a hill once known as Woden's Hill (from the Anglo-Saxon god, Woden) from which the village derives it's current day name. The hill was once the site of a pagan temple, and folklore has it that a golden effigy of Woden lies buried somewhere nearby on 'the hill'. It is said that it was up here on the hill that the pagan priests witnessed the arrival of St. Augustine's ship at nearby Ebbsfleet in 597.

St. Mary's has what has been described as one of the most priceless examples of 13th century carving, a perfectly preserved Sedalia (providing seating for 3 clergymen officiating at a service) Although often seen in Cathedrals, it is very rare to have such an elaborate Sedalia in a parish church.  The adjoining Piscina is carved in a similar style. They are complimented by a silver chalice, still in use, hallmarked 1586. The church has a unique wooden tower, which replaced the original spire in 1745. It is topped off by a cupola, rarely found in England, and likely influenced heavily by the large number of Dutch parishioners who had settled in and around Sandwich after escaping religious persecution in their own country.
