This cache is hidden at a crossroads section near the start of the Turnpike Trail, starting at the Bennachie Visitor Centre and should only take half an hour altogether. If you do wish to walk further this low-level trail will take you through the Pittodrie Estate. It links the Bennachie Centre to Bennachie Rowantree carpark. There and back would be 4 miles.
Can be muddy in places
Roads in the 1600's were just dirt tracks and by law every parish had to look after the roads that ran through their area, but because few villagers travelled far, they didn't bother maintaining the roads to a good standard.
The growth of The Industrial Revolution needed a good transport system and in 1663 Parliament passed what was known as The Turnpike Act. The act allowed magistrates to charge people for using the roads and the money raised was spent on maintaining them to a good standard.
But people had been used to using roads for free and objected to paying a toll, with some jumping the tollgate to avoid paying. To decrease the chance of this happening, spikes (or pikes) were put at the top of the gates - hence the term Turnpike.
Some gates were destroyed altogether and Parliament passed a law that meant anyone who was caught destroying a turnpike could be executed!
