On Saturday, March 27, 2010; the population of the historic mining town of Searchlight, Nevada grew by more than ten times as thousands of activists, organized by the Tea Party Express, gathered near the hometown of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Conservatives from across America came together to hear Sarah Palin greet supporters during this historic Tea Party in the desert. Various news sources reported anywhere from 7,000 to 10,000 Tea Partiers attended the Searchlight event. The star of the event turned out to be the former Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin. At 6 a.m., thousands were already seated in their own folding chairs in orderly rows in front of the stage. Sarah Palin was not scheduled to speak until noon. It was very cold and many were engaged in animated conversations about politics with the people around them. They were excited to be at, what was for most of them, their first Tea Party, and to be in a situation where they could talk politics with strangers.
The Tea Party rally in Searchlight, Nevada kicked off a 20-day bus tour of 43 cities by the Tea Party Express across the nation that ended in Washington, D.C., on April 15: tax day. The rally was held just days after Democrats approved a sweeping overhaul of the U.S. health care system that is opposed by Tea Party activists who advocate for smaller government. Dubbed the "Showdown in Searchlight" by the organizers of Tea Party Express III, the event was held to raise support for retiring the Senate Majority Leader and to also send him the message that many Americans were not happy with the recent passage of the Healthcare Reform Bill. While Senator Reid didn't show up for the event, the message was received.Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid thanked rally attendees for providing an economic boost to his childhood hometown, adding that the election will be decided by Nevadans and not by “people from other states who parachute in for one day to have a tea party.”
