Geocache Description:

Devonport continues to see many changes in its landscape, its residents and its use.

The cache marks the site, which used to be surrounded by a large stone wall.
Please note: the Cache co-ordinates have been changed as the original location got muggled. Coordinates changed to:
N 50° 22.299 W 004° 10.488

The thirty-five acre site, called the South Yard Enclave, was annexed by the Navy after the war as a storage yard, and remained as a divided area for over fifty years. in 2007, the surplus Ministry of Defence land was sold to Government regeneration and it became a Redrow development. The high stone wall which enclosed the area was demolished in January 2007. Local schoolchildren and Groundwork came together to take down the scetion of Devonport wall that stands on the cache site. You can read more about this in the booklet they produced: 'The Day the Digger Ate our Wall'. (visit link)

According to a member of the Devonport Regeneration Partnerhsip (now defunct); Mrs Gilroy said: "Bringing down the Devonport wall was a symbol of change. That change has been on a substantial basis."

Part of the stone wall remains on the south side of the site, bordering Duke Street.

ALR - If you choose, take a picture of yourself (with a view of the land looking towards the water in the background- you will need to cross the road from the location of the cache). If you do, please upload it to the cache photo library. As an extra, you can then link to a FLICKR group to upload your picture and see the photos already collected by fellow cachers. (visit link)
