Geocache Description:

In August 2012 the UK Mega Event is coming to Cartmel in Cumbria. This walk on Humphrey Head to visit some of the Limestone features is one of a varied series of events supporting this Mega Event. It is hosted by Phil (of PhilPamandRob) and Jack (The Magna Defender) supported by other members of the North West Mega Event Team.

2012 UK Mega Event

Humphrey Head is a limestone headland rising to 172 feet (52 metres) above sea level, with excellent views over Morecambe Bay and the Levens Estuary to Lancaster, Morecambe, Heysham and Ulverston. Its eastern side is wooded whilst its western flanks are more exposed with rocky outcrops. The limestone cliffs on Humphrey head are the tallest in Cumbria.

Legend has it that in about 1390, Humphrey Head was where the last wolf in England was killed. Folklore has it that the wolf came down from the Coniston fells where it had caused havoc among the sheep. After attacking a child in the village of Cark, the locals chased it to the end of Humphrey Head where it was killed while hiding among the rocks.

When & Where :
Tuesday 7th August 2012

This event will take place at lunchtime (noon) close to the triangulation point on Humphrey Head. For those wishing to visit the various limestone features (including the nearby earthcache) on Humphrey Head, we will be walking up from Kents Bank,Station, starting at 10am.

Details :
This lunchtime event is to take place at the triangulation point on Humphrey Head. There is limited car parking nearby (at the end of Holy Well Lane), so those wishing to join the group walk should meet at 10am at Kent’s Bank Station, where there is plenty roadside parking. This walk is about a 4 miles long with approximately 200ft of ascent/descent. Dogs are welcome but should remain on leads. Children will also enjoy the educational walk, but should be supervised by an adult owing to the presence of crags etc. Unfortunately the route is not suitable for prams or wheelchairs.

The route from Kent’s Bank will cross the railway and then follow the shoreline to Humphrey Head. We will adopt a leisurely pace and follow a circular route around the head, highlighting many of the limestone features to be seen. We will have a break at each for a short educational talk about the formation of each of these features. There will be a rest at the triangulation point for lunch (so bring drinks and a snack) and an opportunity to chat to other event attendees who have made their own way there. After lunch, the circular walk will continue before descending to follow the same shoreline path back to Kent’s Bank Station.-

Humphrey Head

It must be stressed that everyone partaking in the walk is responsible for their own safety. It is NOT a guided walk, rather a group walking together, where various members know the route being taken. Although the route is following established tracks & paths, some stretches are moderately steep, whilst others are rough under foot.

Humphrey Head is only 172ft high, but it is still an exposed Lakeland fell where the weather can change very rapidly. Everyone should be prepared for the walk by wearing and bringing :
- Walking Boots
- Waterproof & warm clothing
- Drinks and food
- A map and compass (and know how to use them!)
- A camera (for the excellent views in all directions).

Please note, If the weather is particularly bad, we reserve the right to change the walk, or abandon it all together on the grounds of safety.

Geocaches :
As well as the event cache itself, this route will pass at least three other geocaches. The start/finish of the walk at Kent’s Bank is also very close to a fourth geocache.
