A tribute to 2 relatively unknown American Heroes. Master Sergeant Gary Gordon and Sergeant First Class Randy Shuhgart were snipers assigned to US Army Special Operations Command with Task Force Ranger in Mogadishu Somalia. On October 3, 1993 both men were providing sniper cover from Blackhawk helicopters in support of a raid by Delta Force and Army Rangers. During the mission Somali militia shot down 2 Blackhawks with RPGs.
When Gordon and Shughart realized that ground forces could not get to one of the crash sites in time to protect the wounded crew the snipers volunteered to try to secure the crash site themselves. The snipers knew they had little chance at survival and would have no other support but they refused to let their comrades fall into enemy hands. Multiple requests were denied before the ground commander approved their request.
Armed only with their sniper rifles and sidearms both men fought their way to the crash site, provided medical attention to the crew, and defended their wounded comrades for as long as they could before eventually being killed. Their actions helped save the pilot's life and both men were awarded the Medal of Honor. Gordon and Shuhgart's bravery and selfless service was portrayed in the movie "Blackhawk Down".
