How The Mighty Have Fallen Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Wizard of Ooze: As the cache owner has not indicated that they have visited the cache location to replace it if missing, perform needed maintenance, or verify that it is still there within the requested time period, I am regretfully archiving the cache to clear it from the active cache database and open the area to new caching opportunities.

If the cache owner would like to replace a cache at this location, please submit a new geocache listing and it will be reviewed under the current geocaching.com guidelines. Please don’t post a note on your archived listing as it won’t be forwarded to me and I won’t see it. If you need to contact me, please do so by emailing me through the contact link on my geocaching.com profile page or through my website www.wizardofooze.com

Thank you for your contributions to geocaching, and we hope to see you actively geocaching once again in the near future.

Geocache Description:

MacMillan Bloedel, frequently known as Mac-Blo, was one of British Columbia’s pre-eminent forest companies.
Formed in 1951 the company went from strength to strength, expanding their operations until by the 1960’s they were operating across North America, Europe and the United Kingdom.
But they remained first and foremost a BC company.
The land immediately to the west of the cache location was once a giant Mac-Blo sawmill, one of many dotted along the Fraser River.
In 1993 Mac-Blo’s forestry practices drew the ire of environmental groups when it was discovered the company planned to log a pristine area of Clayoquot Sound.
A blockade made up of environmentalists and first nations groups lasted for months and eventually forced Mac-Blo to change the way they harvested their wood.
The company pledged to abandon the controversial and unsightly practice of clear cut logging in favor of more selective logging, however the campaign by environmental groups to discredit the company were so successful that customers worldwide turned away from Mac-Blo products rather than risk incurring the wrath of the environmental movement.
Six years later the once mighty MacMillan Bloedel company was sold to Weyerhaeuser for a meagre 2.45 billion dollars.
The little rest area where the cache is located is one of the last remnants of the once mighty Mac-Blo organization.
There is a plaque on site that explains the connection.
Hope you enjoy your visit.
