Geocache Description:

Cascades was established as a probation station in 1842 and is part of the Convict Trail on the Tasman Peninsula.

The Tasman Peninsula is steeped in history and the Convict Trail encourages tourists and locals to discover the past. The trail uses interperative signs identified by the accompanying yellow markers with the broad arrow convict symbol.

From GZ view The Cascades, the most intact Probation Station on the Peninsula. By 1847 it housed 347 convicts who worked in the area clearing land and growing vegetables. The station became the major timber supply point for the Peninsula and a tramway was used to transport the timber to the jetty. The station closed in 1853.

It is now privately owned and operates as colonial accommodation.
