Cowanesque Island Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

A2G: This had a great run - another fine yurtles cache. I’m sorry to say that I haven’t been able to keep up with these like I obviously should be so we’re going to let this one go. Thanks for all the support over the years!

Geocache Description:

Well, okay, it isn't really an island. But we thought it might be when we first noticed it from route 49. It's a large roundish blob of land out in the lake, only connected to the shore by a thin causeway near the Lawrence Recreation Area. Of course we had to explore it - and then we had to place a cache on it. That's what we do.

Did you know that "Cowanesque" is a Native American term for "overrun with briars"? It is, and the island is. We've seen worse, and even hunted for caches in worse, but we'll be sure to wear armor anytime we visit the island. You might want to too. Sturdy boots would be a good idea too because there's all sorts of old stuff hidden in the grasses and briars. Some of the old stuff may have arrived by flood waters, some may be the remains of an old farm, some may have been left behind by hunters and picnickers. As far as we know, there are no snakes. We don't mean to scare you away; this is a fun place to explore.

You might like to come by boat. There's a boat launch nearby but landing on the island could be tricky. Perhaps we'll check that out in warmer weather.

If you choose to hike to the cache, look for the ghost of old route 49 at N41 58.654 W77 10.654. Follow that until you're near the causeway, then follow the narrow animal trail across the causeway. Beware of snares that are marked with orange flagging. The Corps permits trapping in this area.

Once you're across the causeway, you're on your own.

The views from the cache site are one bonus. The ammo can is hidden well enough (we hope) to escape notice except from a determined cacher, so finding it should be a satisfying second bonus. As a third bonus, the cache is stocked with useful outdoor gear. Please come prepared to trade even or trade up.

Be careful and have fun!

FTF: Raggedy Ann + Andy, Congratulations!
