Alturas is a small community surrounded by a lot of orange groves. It made national news in October 1988 when a murder plot unfolded where a local family was being poisoned by a neighbor. It took Polk County's own Sheriff's department to solve the case. This story can be found on the internet with more detail.
My family has worked in just about every grove in the Alturas area when I was a child. When you ride through this area the first of the year, you can see fruit pickers harvesting oranges.
