Geocache Description:

Update: 1-8-22 We replaced the missing cache container with a round tin (an ammo can will no longer fit). Please re-hide so that it is not easy for curious muggles to spot it.

The cache is not at the listed coordinates, but it is nearby. We took a walk up the slot canyon known as Spooky Canyon and wanted to place a cache inside. But, as the GPS'rs don't like such places, we had to make it an Unknown Cache. There’s no puzzle to solve…the cache can be found by visiting Spooky Canyon and following the simple instructions below!

Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to find the cache inside Spooky Canyon. Park at the listed coordinates, cross under the railway, and head up the canyon. The canyon starts out fairly narrow, opens up into a wider area, and eventually becomes a dark tunnel. Somewhere in between is a short offshoot on the left (as you are walking into the canyon) in which the cache in hidden. This offshoot is the only one we saw and can be found 18-20 paces from the far end of the wide area. Once you climb up into this offshoot, you will find yourself in a small room with walls that reach to the sky! Here is where you will find the cache. Please rehide the cache as well, or better than you found it.

Be sure to continue on into Spooky Canyon, but we recommend you bring flashlights (we found that cell phone flashlights aren’t the best choice!) as it will be as dark as a cave in a very short distance. Soon you will come to a 10’ fairly steep uphill section, which can be climbed fairly easily. But not far from there, the climbs become much tougher. There are ropes to assist the daring ones…the first climb isn’t too bad, but the next one is twice as tall! We didn’t continue beyond the first rope. If you do continue on, be smart and be safe (and bring a camera)!

To get to Spooky canyon, take the Afton Road exit off of I15 and head east. You will be travelling on a fairly well maintained dirt road until you reach the Afton Canyon Campground. 2wd should be good up to this point, but from here, we recommend a 4wd. You will be travelling in a sandy wash for a good deal of the journey and there are a couple of water crossings, which can be deep at times, so proceed with caution. An alternate route would be to come in from Basin road...this would avoid the potentially deep water crossings. Take your time, and enjoy this beautiful area!!
