Geocache Description:

Impression Bay was established as a probation station in 1841 and is part of the Convict Trail on the Tasman Peninsula.

The Tasman Peninsula is steeped in history and the Convict Trail encourages tourists and locals to discover the past. The trail uses interperative signs identified by the accompanying yellow markers with the broad arrow convict symbol.

Impression Bay Probation Station opened in 1841. The land was cleared for growing vegetables and a timber mill later established. By 1846, 445 convicts were based there. Buildings included Superintendent's quarters, three mess rooms, cooking and baking houses, storerooms, a large building containing 72 separate apartments, solitary cells, a hospital, a schoolroom and a church.

The probation station closed in 1857 and operated for six months as a quarantine station. The land was then sold and the area became known as Premaydena in the 1880's

Take a step back in time - follow the Convict Trail as it highlights the history and heritage of the area.
