Geocache Description:

This cache isn’t at St Wulstan’s Chapel … it’s just near the site of the former hospital chapel in the land that is now part of St Wulstan’s Local Nature Reserve.

The cache itself is a large sandwich style box, so plenty of room for swaps and trackables. It has been placed on a short round trip from the car park of less than a mile. Gravel paths lead round the site making it somewhat suitable for pushchairs, however the cache is inevitably a short way off the beaten path.

St Wulstan’s Local Nature Reserve is a glorious hidden gem in the shadow of the Malvern Hills.

The reserve has a range of habitats and is great for kids with plenty of paths at one end and great wide-open spaces at the other.

But behind all of this hides a fascinating history as a leading centre for rehabilitation for forty years. This history began in the Second World War when the site was given to the US Army to serve as a hospital for shell shocked troops returning from the D-Day landings. Then in the 1950’s it was used as a TB hospital before becoming a successful psychiatric hospital from the 1960’s to 1980’s.

The site opened as a nature reserve in 1997 with both natural and planted areas to promote a range of flora and fauna – it remains a wonderfully therapeutic place to exorcise everyday stress.

A lot more of the history of the site can be learnt from the official book (“From Nurture to Nature”) or via the following websites:

* Official Worcester County Council Site - (visit link)
* Local Supporters Website - (visit link)

Please note that at certain times of the year (normally out of season) livestock are used to maintain the nature reserve and access for dogs can be limited as a result.

Thanks to the Worcestershire County Council Countryside Service for granting permission to place this cache.
