A Short History Lesson By Zeke Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

-allenite-: As there's been no response from the cache owner to my previous note, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. Please note that if geocaches are archived by a reviewer or Geocaching HQ for lack of maintenance, they are not eligible for unarchival.

Geocache Description:

A Place of History

Please be respectful of this area.Read the stone monument and you will understand why. This was one of the three areas that the native tribe, the Pottawatomie would use as a camp site. When settlers moved to this area in around the 1820 -1830s,the Pottawatomie were led by Chief Baw Beese. They were a peaceful tribe, his tribe never larger than 150. In fact Chief Baw Beese and his tribe help the first white people by providing them with food and medical care during some harsh winters.Baw Beese signed a treaty with the white men and both sides respected each other.
That ended when A white settler who thought he have bought land he thought he had rightfully purchased, wrote President William Harrison asking for the removal of the "Red Men" from this area. Understand that this tribe had lived here for hundred's if not thousands of years. It was A sad day for most as they watched the Chief drive his horse drawn carriage, led his tribe from their homelands .Schools were let out so children could say good bye to the tribe. Some of the white settlers even took some tribe members in and kept safe and others went east into Canada to escape being moved to Iowa.
Again be careful, the cache is near the road, so no need to go more than 10 feet into the area. There have been remains found here,so I'm treating this like A cementery cache. NO NITE CACHING!
