A 500ml crocodile thermos in a hidey hole, just a stone's throw off the trail. Access is a 14km drive up a good logging road to a popular winter recreation destination. Winter access will require 4x4 or chains, although the road does get ploughed.
Q: What’s a crocodile doing way up at 3448 feet?
A: Whatever it wants.
The Dakota Ridge is a first class winter recreational destination on the Sunshine Coast, as well as mountain-biking and hiking heaven the rest of the year. To get there from Highway 101, turn north at the IGA mall/Shell station (Field Road), just east of Sechelt. At the "T" at the top, turn east on the Forest Service Road, and continue on for 14 km following the signs at any forks in the road. Always choose the most well travelled track. Park at the given parking coordinates.
We made a spur of the moment decision to go snowshoeing and, seeing that Dakota Ridge didn't have a geocache to look for, decided to put together a quick one from what was in the hall cupboard. We dropped it off in a likely spot that shouldn't be too hard to find, about 50 feet off the trail (which was 4 feet of snow at the time). Use your geosense and it should soon be in hand.
This is a fairly level hike of .43 miles (2270' 4 51/64") each way. Don't forget your camera and your trail map, there are some incredible views!
August 17, 2012 brings news of a new gate that has been installed at N49 30.065 W123 36.582, 1800 feet south of the parking lot. It appears that this is part of an effort to curb recent vandalism. During the “no snow” seasons, park here and enjoy the walk up to the parking lot.
