This 194km2 chunk of aspen parkland and southern boreal forest wouldn’t been here today if not for the local community.
In 1906 five local citizens, concerned with the dwindling elk population made a plan to preserve some of the landscape and save the area's elk from disappearing. These gentlemen put up a $5000 bond and petitioned the government to create "Elk Park”, Canada’s first wild animal preserve. In 1911 the Government of Canada created the world’s first national park system, and in 1913 Elk Park became Elk Island Dominion Park.
