The Misty Mountains are a large range covering almost 800 miles in Middle-earth. Bilbo’s party needed to cross over these mountains in order to reach the Lonely Mountain, the end of their journey and the beginning of their adventure. A bad storm and the giants dwelling in the mountains drove the party into a cave, at which time they were captured by goblins. In the rescue by Gandalf, Bilbo is knocked off Dori’s shoulders and is left behind. Moria, the fabled dwarf kingdom, was established in the middle of the Misty Mountains and then abandoned once a Balrog was unearthed in the dwarves’ substantial mining.
