The City of Calgary started off with one library, Carnegie Library, our first library and the first public library in Alberta(1912). The park that the library is next to was renamed “Memorial” in 1928, reflecting its role as the home of Calgary’s memorials for the Boer War and the two World Wars. More libraries joined the Calgary Public Library system over the years.
• Alexander Calhoun Library in 1954, named after the first director of the CPL. W.R Castell”Central” library opens in 1963.
• Bowness Library in 1964, the current location came about in 1979.
• Southwood Library opened in October 1966.
• Nose Hill Library opens in 1988 the first library with CD's in their collection.
• Country Hills Library in 2004.
• The latest edition the CPL chain was in January 2012 Saddletowne Library.
