Geocache Description:

A multi around the picturesque Saxon market town of Shaftesbury visiting some of its sacred heritage.

The circular route is a distance of 2 kms, involves a short climb and a steep descent down cobbles. The locals - with stamina - happily push buggies and bikes along these routes. Please bring a pen.

Shaftesbury was built 718 feet (219 metres) above sea level on the side of a chalk and greensand hill, part of Cranborne Chase. It is one of the oldest and highest towns in Britain , the only significant hilltop settlement in Dorset, and has one of the most recognisable views in the country.

It has a long religious history - in medieval times the town boasted 11 places of worship - which started in 880 when the settlement was founded by King Alfred the Great. Eight years later he built the Abbey placed his daughter Aethelgifu as the first Abbess and for the next 650 years it was the most important in the country with many royal links.

In 1539 the Abbey was dissolved on the orders of Henry VIII and the majority of the Abbey precinct was destroyed and forgotten. However, in 1931 a lead casket containing bones, thought to be the remains of Edward, King and Martyr, were found in the grounds of the Abbey ruins which led to renewed interest in the Abbey.

Today the town serves its community with 5 churches a Quaker House, Jehovah's Witness Hall and Christian Centre.
