Originally patented in the mid-1800's, "Devil's rope," or barbed wire, is both revered and cursed by cattle ranchers and farmers.
Compared to traditional hedge, wood, or stone fences, barbed wire is less expensive, more available, and faster to install. In the old days, installers quickly learned that barbed wire seemed to be possessed. Without provocation, it would lacerate the skin, shred jeans, and snag hairy tails. Hence the nickname, Devil's rope. Many modern ranchers and farmers still have a love/hate relationship with Devil's rope...and the scars to prove it. Cachers should beware of Devil's rope, too!
A few Devil's rope facts: To date, collectors have found more than 2,000 types and variations of that tempermental fencing material. There are over 530 existing patents for barbed wire. And finally, more than $203,000,000 is spent on barbed wire each year in the United States.
By the way, did you hear what happened to the cow that tried to jump over the barbed wire fence? Udder destruction!
