Geocache Description:

A Brief tour of a few of Brattleboro’s Big Trees. I love trees - big trees, funky gnarly trees, trees with history and character. Here are a few of my favorites in this town…

FINAL: N42 50.ABC W072 33.DEF Brattleboro is home to several Big Trees that are on the VT State Big Tree Registry. This little mini-geo-tour will show you a couple of State Champions in our midst that you may never have noticed before. Big Trees are measured on a point system, according to their height, crown spread, and circumference. This link will show you the current list. http://www.vtfpr.org/urban/vt_big_tree_search.cfm Posted waypoint is for the first tree. The first tree on your tour is a well-known landmark in town, and rightfully deserves respect for holding out against all the sprawl surrounding it. On the Big Tree Scale, this Silver Maple beauty has a score of 353 points. The number on the mailbox nearest the tree is XYZ. X=B, Z=C. The second tree is not on the State Champion list. It just happens to be my favorite downtown Brattleboro tree. It’s a sycamore, also known as London Plane Tree - the State Champ is just up the road in Harmonyville, and is a LOT bigger, but this is a beautiful specimen too. At GZ, you will find a 3-digit number. Add 5 to find DEF. The third, a Cucumbertree, is a marvel of survival. First of all, these are southern trees and not normally found this far north. Secondly, trees need air, water, and food to their roots to survive and grow. By any form of logic, this one should not even be surviving, much less be the biggest one in the State of Vermont, with a score of 217 points! This poor thing is showing signs of the stress it's under, but I think it deserves extra points for tenacity! Cucumbertrees have leaves the size of dinner plates, tulip-like flowers in the spring, and seed pods the size of, well, what would you think? DO come see it in summer to really appreciate it. The street number of the nearby business establishment is XY. Y-X=A. FINAL: N42 50.ABC W072 33.DEF Daytime only please Near the cache you will find the movers and shakers of early Brattleboro, and lots of big trees, though they didn‘t make it to The List. ENJOY!
