Fair 30 minute uphill hike mainly on tarmac road and good forestry road, may be a little muddy at start due to groundworks.
Fourth cache in the mini series.
Park at waymarked coords and proceed West across some rough ground to road, turn left at waymarked green utilities shed and proceed uphill on good tarmac road, go round the back of the training ground and follow your GPS from here.
This is such a nice peaceful spot by the water, I felt it warranted a cache, it is more a revamped pond than a reservoir now being a fraction of it's original size and much shallower.
The new forestry road unfortunately cuts across one end of the original size of the reservoir however the old concrete outflow on to the staircase can be found in the woods hiding under a tree just across the road and upstream a bit from the GZ.
The original castle supply came from natural springs on the moor and was piped directly to the castle, with the building of the hospital in the 1930s a much greater supply was needed, more water was taken from the moor and funneled into a series of channels, this fed into an open reservoir on the Netherton burn, from here it was piped into the massive 250,000 gallon concrete underground tank just down the hill from the cache GZ on the left before the road junction, the water then went through various treatments before being distributed around the hospital. This huge tank is no longer in use and is empty and accessible although I would advise not entering. The small pond at the GZ no longer supplys water to the estate.
***Well done to C2 for FTF***
