Geocache Description:

the bay of Emma is a secluded cove on the Saint Mary's Footpath. the walk is approximately 3 miles in length and is well worth the effort on a nice day.

This secluded cove is arguably one of the finest spots on Orkney. The little bay is well sheltered and features crystal clear water and caves which our little one is sure were used by smugglers or pirates in the past. if you take the time to visit be sure to experiment with making echos but try not to disturb any nesting birds if you visit in the spring.

If you park at the suggested spot, the trail is signposted. the path skirts the coast and this stretch of beach is great for finding shells at low tide. The loch beside the parking is excellent for spotting ducks in winter time making the trip worthwhile at any point in the year. The trail hugs the fence line but has fallen away in places so you will need to walk along the beach. The trail may be unsuitable for dogs which you aren't able to lift over styles as there are 2 or 3 to negotiate.

The Bay of Emma is the ideal spot for a picnic and the best way back to the car is to continue along the trail and join the road at the waypoint provided. it is a pleasant stroll back down the hill along the road into the village.

As there are occasionally sheep in the area, be sure to close all field gates and take your litter home with you.
