This is a really pretty spot for walking, not far from Santa Barbara's "Mesa" neighborhood. However, due to it's inaccessibility, you could be a long-time Santa Barbara resident and not even know that the place exists...unless you read the local papers, that is. This area has an interesting history (see the "hints" section below), and has recently been the subject of controversy over its policy of allowing dogs to roam without leashes. Special thanks to Shylock and Fiona for providing the history of the area!
If you come by car, please be respectful of the locals when finding a parking spot. There are several entrances to the area, and some offer better opportunities for parking than others.
This spot is great for dogs and children, and once you've found the area, finding the cache shouldn't be too challenging. I recommend going on a clear day. Nearby, there are cliffs overlooking the ocean that provide a nice view of the Channel Islands and the Santa Barbara coastline. If it's clear enough, you can look up the coast (westward) and see the clock tower at UCSB.
The cache is a slightly cammoed Snapware box. Since the area is heavily traveled, please make sure it's well concealed.
The area used to be called the Wilcox Property, and was slated for development, but a grass-roots movement raised money to buy the property. At the last minute, the renowned actor Michael Douglas made a large donation that made the purchase possible. Michael asked that the property be renamed the "Douglas Family Preserve" in honor of his father, Kirk Douglas.
