Another one of my "Welcome to" series.
In 1873, Mr. John Ledue was the first settler on Lake Ariana, purchasing a 40 acre homestead from the State of Florida. Dr. John Patterson, also one of the first settlers, had a goal of developing a sanitarium – a health retreat – to attract visitors to the area. Although his vision never materialized, the area (located east of what is now Auburndale) was named Sanitaria.
Mr. Robin Fuller, was approached by representative of the railroad, requesting that he donate land for a depot in Sanitaria. His refusal prompted the railroad to consider other options. When nearby property owners, James Hampton and Hartwell Howard were willing to donate half of their homestead for this purpose, Auburndale’s history began, and the history of Sanitaria began its decline. In March, 1884, the railroad was complete and four months later the first house was built in Auburndale.
Major Louis McClain, civic engineer was responsible for the planning of the downtown area. Major McClain corresponded with his friend, editor of the Boston Herald, describing the location. His friend’s wife, Louise, commented the description reminded her of her hometown Auburndale, Massachusetts. And so it was that Auburndale was named.
Auburndale was a growing town; its industry was agriculture, mainly citrus, as well as other crops still grown in Polk County today. E. M. Baynard, a wealthy merchant, citrus grower and cattle rancher, built his home in 1894 on West Lake Avenue. This Victoria structure in one of the oldest existing houses in Auburndale today. The Baynard House is open for regular or private house tours.
Auburndale was incorporated as a city in 1911. The residential area was centered around Lake Stella.
The 1920's brought major progression to the city of Auburndale. A $60,000 Spanish-style building was constructed to house the Police Department, Fire Department, City Library and firefighters sleeping barracks. Today, this building houses City Hall.
