Geocache Description:

The triumph was a civil ceremony and religious rite of ancient Rome, held to publicly celebrate and sanctify the military achievement of an army commander who had won great military successes.

On the day of his triumph, the triumphant general rode in a chariot through the streets of Rome with a vast procession of attendants, which included the entire senate, trumpeters, carts with the spoils of war, white bulls, the arms of the conquered enemy, captured enemy leaders and their relatives, and the army (without weapons or armour).
When the procession reached the bottom of the Capitoline Hill in central Rome, the triumphant general would ascend the steps to the temple of Jupiter at the top, where he sacrificed the white bulls to Jupiter. The captured enemy leaders were then (usually) executed.
Triumphal processions were keenly anticipated days of celebration for the entire Roman populace, who would line the parade route for hours in advance. Often a banquet was served for the citizens in the evening.
