Geocache Description:

This Earthcache takes you to one of my favorite locations. I still like to hike and camp here whenever in the area. We use to by a $1 Christmas tree permit and cross country ski through this canyon looking for the perfect tree.

The U.S. Forest Service designated nearly 3,600 acres of land as the Sheep Creek Canyon Geological Area on May 13, 1962, to preserve the spectacular geology of the canyon for future generations. This remarkable area is located along part of the Sheep Creek drainage west of Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. Sheep Creek Canyon is an excellent place to learn about the Earth's geologic history.

Tower Rock in the northeast part of Sheep Creek Canyon Geological Area.

An erathem is the total stratigraphic record deposited during a certain corresponding span of time during an era in the geologic timescale. By using Tower Rock, and the above two charts, answer the following questions:

1. How many bands of colors do you see from top to bottom? Using the above chart, what Erathem do you think the tower is? What is the rock?

2. How many Million Years Ago (mya) was this rock layer formed?

3. The upper Weber is similar to the lower unit except it does not contain limestone beds and is more highly cross-bedded. In addition, the lower Weber tends to be slightly darker than the upper Weber and weathers into blocky outcrops. Can you tell where the upper weber begins? What color does the tower change from and change to on rock tower?
